Vulkan, the artificer Though Vulkan was not the only forge-smith amongst the Emperor's vaunted sons, he was perhaps the most inclined toward the artisanal, and the vaults and armouries of Prometheus fairly overflowed with the many weapons, vehicles and arcane devices that he had fashioned. Favouring creativity over function, many of these artefacts had unique purposes - some devastating, others apparently miraculous and known only to the primarch himself. As Horus's rebellion came to be known, Vulkan ordered his many works destroyed, for fear that they would be misused. He allowed only seven to remain, chosen by his most trusted Forgemaster. Some had simple titles, while others were named later as their legend grew: The Unbound Flame, a device both terrible and wonderous; The Obsidian Chariot, its armour near impregnable; the Spear of Vulkan, whose true power could only be harnessed by one of the primarch brotherhood; the Song of Entropy, which no defence can resist; the Chalice of Fire, the maker of the sublime and enduring; the Eye of Vulkan, that whose gaze is as death; and the Engine of Woes, whose wrath has never been unleashed.
Prometheus The moon Prometheus is over-large for its parent, and as a result its gravity well wreaks terrible havoc upon Nocturne's surface. Tectonic upheaval ravages the world - the earth splits, volcanoes speak their thunder and the vety sky cracks with pyroclastic lightning storms. It was on the moon rather than Vulkan's home world that the XVIII Legion raised its greatest bastion and spaceport. It is a highly defensible structure fashioned, at least in part, of an almost inviolable black alloy of the primarch's own design. Tasked by Vulkan in the final days before Isstvan V, Torgefather T'kell and the Unscarred finally began their long journey from Prometheus to the Wrought, one of the many secret armouries and safeholds of the Salamanders across the galaxy.
Obek, also known as 'Firebearer', is the nominal commander of the Unscarred and a captain amongst the wider ranks of the Firedrakes. As is the case with many in the Legion, Obek forges his own weapons and has a plentiful arsenal at his disposal. Favoured above all is the sword Obsidian, an apparently unbreakable blade with an edge capable of rending even legionary battleplate with ease. Rahz Obek T'kell T'kell was the first of the Legion Techmarines to whom Vulkan taught his supreme craft. A gifted artificer in his own right, Tkell was able to alloy his Martian training to the wisdom of a primarch and thus make of himself something much greater. Unlike many of his brethren, Tkell fought little during the Great Crusade, instead remaining on Prometheus to watch over Vulkan's works, eventually being named as the first Forgefather of the Salamanders.
The Unscarred Vulkan did not make the fateful journey to Isstvan V with his entire cohort of Firedrakes. Ordered by their primarch, a small cadre of the elite fire-born remained behind to protect Nocturne's fortress moon of Prometheus. After the dire tidings of the Dropsite Massacre reached them, these Firedrakes dubbed themselves 'Unscarred', for they alone amongst their elite brotherhood had not bled and died on the sands of Isstvan. The Unscarred remove all honour markings from their flesh, burning off or otherwise obscuring them, to atone for not having fought alongside their primarch during his darkest hour. Their numbers include legionaries in scaled war-plate as well as formidable Tartaros-pattern Terminator armour. Almost without exception, they each bear an honorific name to be used in the heat of battle.
