Word Bearers Legion Colours At the outset of the galactic civil war, the majority of the XVIIth Legion was liveried in the grey of the Imperial Heralds of old, with the exception of the Serrated Sun Chapter, a unit favoured by Lorgar whose personnel were first among equals in the heralding of the treachery to come. As the Age of Darkness progressed, the deep red armour, with secondary elements of black and banding of gold of the Serrated Sun Chapter became the standard livery borne by the majority of the Legion’s warriors and war machines. Heraldry of the XVIIth Legiones Astartes - Word Bearers Known from inception as the ‘Imperial Heralds’, the culture of the XVIIth Legion was ever one of zealotry, even before unification with their Primarch Lorgar in 857.M30. It was perhaps this combination of atavistic zeal and the reverence of higher principles that led to the Word Bearers becoming first among heretics, and in their quest for the forbidden heralding the galaxy-wide horror of the Age of Darkness. Line Officers are Sergeants, Lieutenants (junior Centurions) and Captains (senior Centurions), while Legion Officers are those of higher rank (Consuls, and Praetors commanding a Battalion or Chapter). While the Word Bearers remain true to the organisational templates set down at the outset of the Great Crusade, they utilise a parallel chain of command in the form of Chaplains -leaders of the spirit who in specific matters are senior event to battlefield commanders.

Salamanders Legion Colours The Salamanders wear heraldry of chromium-oxide green, with contrasting elements of flame-orange and black redolent of the volcanoes of their home world. Banding is bronze or gold and often highly sculptural, with other symbols in white or black. The Legion suffered terribly at Isstvan V and were thus rarely able to maintain their battle plate to their high standards. Nonetheless, with every Legionary an accomplished metalworker, even the most battered and abused suit was kept functional. Heraldry of the XVIII™ Legiones Astartes - Salamanders With the XVIU'h Legion’s unification with its Primarch, Vulkan, in 832.M30, came a wholesale reorganisation of what had been ad hoc groupings into one ordered around the seven great ‘Realms’ of Nocturne. While the cultural trappings of Nocturne would be worn proudly, the Primarch was wise enough to fuse them with elements of the old Terran Legion’s heraldry. Thus are seen together symbols of Terran unity alongside the nigh impenetrable runes of the Promethean Cult. Heraldry of the XDC" Legiones Astartes - Raven Guard From its earliest days, the XIXth Legion specialised in rapid deployment and reconnaissance operations, and with the uniting of the Legion with its Primarch Corvus Corax in 922.M30, these tendencies were codified further. The Legion utilises simple, utilitarian heraldry, shunning adornment except during those rare occasions when it is deployed in strategic-level actions where subterfuge is secondary to an overt show of force. Line Officers are Sergeants, Lieutenants (junior " Centurions) and Captains (senior Centurions), while Legion Officers are those of higher rank (Consuls, and Praetors commanding a Battalion or Chapter). The Raven Guard maintain a distinctly flexible chain of command, and while most officers bear the standard rank titles, a wide range of alternative terms relating to the hearer’s specific role or tactical predilections are used, such as ‘Strike-Leader’ or ‘Shadow Lord’.

It is not uncommon for forces to take to battle with no iconography displayed at all, making for an army of anonymous killers.
